TUs try to block rly tracks in Trichy

Trichy: The nationwide strike call by central trade unions against the Union govt saw large-scale protests in Trichy on Wednesday. Members of AITUC, CITU, INTUC, AIBEA, AIBOA, BEFI, Tamil Nadu govt employees' associations, railway unions, postal employees, and transport workers held demonstrations at various locations.More than a thousand protesters were detained for attempting to block railway tracks at Trichy Junction. They marched from the Periyar statue near Central bus stand towards the railway station, raising slogans. Police and Railway Protection Force personnel erected barricades to prevent them from entering the station premises. However, protesters pushed past the barricades, entered the junction and squatted on the tracks, leading to a scuffle with security personnel. At Srirangam, members of CITU and AITUC blocked Cuddalore passenger train after taking out a procession from Rajagopuram. More than a hundred people, including union functionaries, were detained.
The unions demanded withdrawal of Labour Codes, formation of National Finance Commission for unorganised workers, rollback of Seed Act 2025 and amendments to Motor Vehicles Act, and opposed privatisation in public sector undertakings. Despite the strike, public transport services largely operated without disruption.
