Young Twitter users disappoint Shashi Tharoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: UDF candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor, who expects to garner a major chunk of his votes from young and tech savvy citizens, received a prepoll hint that it would be better to shift focus on to others. Tharoor, who launched a poll in Twitter recently, was in for an unpleasant surprise when he found that many in social media have no voter’s ID card and have not enrolled themselves in the electoral roll.

On March 19, Tharoor had started a poll in his official Twitter page asking how many of the Twitter users have registered to vote in the current elections, and how many have ID cards and intended to vote. Of the 15,184 who responded, only 66% stated that they have registered themselves to vote. A disappointed Tharoor tweeted, “If you’re educated enough to be on @Twitter, why would you abdicate the responsibility for determining your country’s political destiny to strangers?”

Around 12 % said they have not registered while 11% said they don’t want to vote. Another 11% opined that they have IDs, but are unable to vote. Tharoor will face voters in Thiruvananthapuram for the third time in this election. This time around, the constituency expects a tight triangular fight with NDA fielding
