Women’s panel resolves 60 complaints at adalat

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala women's commission has resolved 60 complaints out of the 350 that were considered at the two-day adalat held at Jawahar Bal Bhavan.Among the complaints resolved, there was a case involving four daughters who abandoned their elderly mother after taking money from her by promising to take care of her. The commission handed over the case to the vigilance committee, which intervened and recovered the money for the mother. The commission also succeeded in convincing an alcoholic man to undergo treatment at a de-addiction centre through counselling.During the adalat, police reports were sought for 18 cases, and four complaints were referred for counselling. On Saturday, 150 complaints were considered, and 20 were resolved. Police reports were sought for nine cases, and one was referred for counselling.According to commission chairperson, P Sathidevi, the number of children abandoning their elderly parents is increasing. "After taking their parents' money and property through false promises, many children neglect them. Protecting parents is the duty of the children beyond legal obligations," she said.Sathidevi also added that there has been an increase in cases related to workplace harassment, and it is encouraging that more women are coming forward to speak out. "Complaints related to marital discord and property disputes are also being brought to the commission," she said, adding that more cases are being resolved with the help of vigilance committees and district legal aid authorities.
