Water woes in Kazhakkootam take centre Stage at DDC
Thiruvananthapuram: The persistent drinking water shortage in Kazhakkootam emerged as a key concern at the district development committee (DDC) meeting held under the chairmanship of district collector Anu Kumari, who stressed the need for greater coordination among govt departments to expedite development projects.
The meeting reviewed the progress of various development initiatives and discussed several pressing public issues, including the water crisis in Kazhakkootam, improved transport connectivity from Kochuveli Railway Station, infrastructure projects in Varkala, and traffic management measures in Attingal.
Highlighting the importance of inter-departmental cooperation, the collector said coordinated efforts were essential to ensure the timely completion of development works. She also called for maximum public participation in the first phase of census 2027, during which citizens will be able to submit their details online through the “self-enumeration” process from June 16 to 30.
Among the issues raised, the drinking water shortage in Kazhakkootam received particular attention. The constituency, which has witnessed rapid urbanisation and population growth driven by the expansion of Technopark and related residential developments, has been facing recurring complaints of inadequate water supply. Residents in several areas have reported disruptions in water availability, especially during peak summer months, leading to growing demands for immediate and long-term solutions.
The committee also discussed increasing bus services connecting Kochuveli Railway Station with the city to improve accessibility for passengers. Other matters taken up included the construction of the Idava village office, installation of CCTV cameras in Varkala’s tourism destinations to enhance safety and security, and activation of traffic signals at Alankode Junction in Attingal to ease congestion and improve road safety.
Officials said the concerns raised during the meeting would be pursued with the respective departments for necessary action.
The meeting was attended by V. Muraleedharan, District Panchayat President V. Priyadarshini, Additional District Magistrate Nirmal Kumar G., District Planning Officer Deepa Sivasdas and senior officials from various government departments
