Safety concerns, infra limits prompt foreign tanker’s shift

Thiruvananthapuram: As rough monsoon conditions intensify off Kerala coast, maritime authorities have initiated precautionary measures to relocate vulnerable vessels anchored near Vizhinjam, amid concerns over drifting incidents and safety risks during the season.

A foreign oil tanker, M V Solis, currently anchored in the outer sea near Vizhinjam, has been directed to shift to inner anchorage at Kollam port following instructions from director general of shipping (DG shipping).

Vinulal S, purser in-charge, warned that strong monsoon waves could snap the vessel’s anchor and push it towards the rocky shoreline, potentially causing damage. The decision to relocate the tanker is part of efforts to ensure maritime safety during the southwest monsoon.

A port official said the relocation was also influenced by infrastructure limitations at Vizhinjam port. According to him, M V Solis, approximately 100m long, couldn’t be accommodated at the current port infrastructure, which is designed to handle comparatively smaller vessels.

“The existing facilities can accommodate vessels of around 50-60m in length. The tanker requires a berth depth of around 6m for safe anchorage,” said the official.

Authorities said Kollam port was selected as an alternative anchorage point as it offers suitable depth and safer conditions for the vessel during monsoon season. Technical arrangements, including tug assistance required to move and anchor the ship safely, are being worked out by the shipping agency concerned.

DG Shipping authorities reportedly instructed the agency to complete the relocation process before May 25 considering the worsening sea conditions.

The tanker had been in waters off Vizhinjam after being detained, while concerns grew over adverse weather conditions in the region. Officials said precautionary relocation of vessels during monsoon is aimed at reducing the risk of maritime accidents and protecting coastal areas from potential hazards.

The development highlighted the need for adequate berthing and anchorage facilities for larger vessels at smaller ports along Kerala coast, especially during extreme weather conditions when emergency relocation measures become necessary.

With monsoon expected to strengthen further in the coming days, authorities are closely monitoring sea conditions and assessing risks to vessels anchored off the coast.
