THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The decision of the state government to open a beverage outlet on the
Panavila-Thampanoor
stretch has invited the wrath of the residents of
Rajaji Nagar
, Chenkalchoola, who have come together to fight the move. Around 70 residents of the colony, mostly women and children, came out in the streets to
protest against the opening of the outlet on Sunday.
“My husband died after taking 16 glasses of arrack after he made a bet with his friend. This happened 26 years back. My son was an alcohol addict and he committed suicide by hanging himself. He was only 22 years when he died. I had gone through so much of miseries because of alcohol and I do not want another family to go through the same situation,’’ said Girija, a resident of the colony.
Many of the residents who had participated in the protest said some political party workers came and threatened them and asked to withdraw from the strike. But, they said they would never back off from the protest.
“I was stopped by a stranger last night who threatened me that I would be beaten up if I go forward with the protest. Some party workers went to each house and threatened the families who joined the protest,” said another resident.
Thampanoor councillor M V Jayalekshmi who represents the area in the city corporation also opposed the move.
“We are trying create awareness against the usage of drugs and narcotics among the residents in the colony. Opening an outlet in that area is totally an unwise decision and all our efforts will become futile,” she said.
