DMO urges caution amid intense heat

T'puram: District medical officer (DMO) issued a public advisory urging residents to exercise caution as intense heat continues to be reported across the district. Emphasizing need for preventive measures, the DMO stated that self-care is crucial to avoid heat-related health complications.People have been advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11am and 3pm, when temperatures are at their peak. Special care should be taken for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with serious illnesses. The advisory warned that extreme heat can lead to serious health issues such as sunstroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. Individuals engaged in outdoor work are advised to reschedule their working hours to minimize exposure. The public is also urged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to use protective measures such as footwear and umbrellas when stepping outside. In case of physical discomfort, one should rest in a shaded area, drink sufficient water, change out of tight clothing, cool the body with water and seek ventilation or air conditioning. If symptoms persist, medical attention should be sought immediately. DMO also highlighted signs of heatstroke, including very high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, dry and flushed skin, severe headache, dizziness, nausea, fainting and extreme fatigue. Immediate first aid followed by medical treatment is essential in such cases. Additionally, people are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure to prevent heat rashes and to keep affected areas of the body dry to reduce irritation.
