Corp to launch pre-monsoon cleaning drive

Thiruvananthapuram: City corporation will launch the

pre-monsoon cleaning drive

on Monday.

The drive, which will be held till May 15, will begin with meetings of sanitation and health committees to decide on cleaning of drains, source reduction of mosquitoes, clearing garbage piles and preventive steps to combat monsoon diseases. A volunteer shall be chosen for 50 houses to coordinate source reduction.

Awareness campaigns will be held at government and private institutions, marriage auditoriums, clubs and markets on importance of observing dry day. Garbage piles will be identified and waste will be segregated. Dry day will be observed on all Sundays. Mass fogging will be done by health circles based on case reports.

Health standing committee chairman K Sreekumar said corporation could significantly reduce incidence of dengue in the city due to early intervention in 2018. The micro-level monitoring and intensive source reduction campaign initiated in each ward following the unprecedented dengue outbreak in 2017 had significantly reduced number of dengue cases in the city. tnn
