Chilakoor tunnel remains closed

T'puram: Weeks after its inauguration, Chilakoor tunnel at Varkala, part of Akkulam–Chettuva inland waterway project, remains closed for public, with a significant portion of the work still incomplete.The tunnel, opened by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Feb amid considerable fanfare, was projected as a landmark tourism and infrastructure component under Phase I of Akkulam–Chettuva waterway. However, officials now confirm that over 40% of the works are still pending, delaying the commencement of boating services. The project is being implemented by Kerala Waterways and Infrastructure Ltd (KWIL), which has envisioned the tunnel as a unique tourism attraction. Plans include operating an electric boat service through the tunnel, complemented by a light-and-sound show. Meanwhile, despite the delay, officials say progress is being made steadily. Electrification works required for operating the electric boats are currently under way, while key components related to the charging infrastructure are yet to be completed. Supporting infrastructure has seen partial completion, including a parking area paved with interlock tiles, canal protection work spanning around 250m on both sides, and the construction of the deck. "We can expect all the works to be completed within 20 days," a KWIL official said, adding that the agency is targeting a public opening by mid-April if the remaining works proceed as scheduled. The Akkulam–Chettuva waterway is part of larger West Coast Canal system, which is being developed to promote inland water transport and tourism across Kerala.
