Akkulam glass bridge likely to open in April
T'puram: The state-constituted committee directed the district tourism promotion council (DTPC) to apply one more layer of glass coating to the glass bridge constructed at Akkulam tourist village in the capital. The opening of the glass bridge was delayed for the past year due to a crack that developed on it. Currently, the tourism department expects the opening of the glass bridge in April, as the glass coating process will take at least a month. The instruction was given by the glass experts included in the committee. An official close to the project said that the committee has glass experts who are also members of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and they recommended the DTPC to apply one more glass coating to the bridge as part of strengthening it before opening it to the public. "The expert committee was formed by the govt last year. After completion, there will be a final inspection," the official said.Last year, during an inspection by experts from the National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Kozhikode and a Chennai-based team, cracks were discovered in a three-layer, 12mm glass panel. While the overall structure was deemed secure, authorities decided to replace the entire glass surface to prioritize safety. The bridge now includes enhanced safety features alongside LED walls that simulate the illusion of breaking glass, adding an adventurous element to the experience. Spanning 52m, the Akkulam glass bridge is the longest of its kind in the region. It offers several unique attractions, including artificial fog, mist, and LED lighting effects. Unlike similar structures in Vagamon and Wayanad, the Akkulam bridge will remain open at night, with the entire structure illuminated for a spectacular sightseeing experience.Visitors can also enjoy views of Akkulam Lake and the nearby Air Force Museum, making it an ideal spot for both adventure seekers and families.
