MUMBAI: Two men, including the in-charge and supervisor of a contractual firm, were arrested for the
death of three labourers at a civic sewage treatment plant at Mira Road on Wednesday.
The sub-contractor of
SPML Infra Ltd
, that had bagged the five-year contract, Andwara Pathar, was booked under IPC section 304 (a) for causing death due to negligence. She has not been arrested yet.
SPML in-charge for the plant at Shrusti Complex, Narendra Anthad, and supervisor, Prince Singh, were arrested on Thursday by Kashimira police.
No Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation official has so far been booked for the deaths. Residents alleged that the presence of toxic gases in and around the plant was brought to the notice of civic officials but no action was taken. The complainant in the case is API Sarojana Mokalikar.
Muzaffar Moulik (24), Rafique Mandal (50) and Moufijum Mandal (19), casual labourers from Indralok, Phase 6, Mira Road, died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a choked valve in the open chamber of the plant.
Anthad, Singh and Pathar have been accused of negligence for making the untrained workers carry out a risky job without safety measures.
