A bench consisting of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah issued a notice to Payal Abdullah and required her to reply within six weeks.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Omar Abdullah, argued that the marriage was effectively "dead," noting the couple has been living separately for the past 15 years.

Previously, the Delhi High Court dismissed Omar Abdullah’s plea for divorce on December 12, 2023, stating that there was no merit in his appeal.

This decision upheld a 2016 family court ruling that had also refused to grant the divorce decree to Omar Abdullah, who is a former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Supreme Court's intervention marks the latest development in the long-standing legal dispute between Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah.
