Speaking on the occasion, CM Conrad Sangma said, “Human rights is an important issue as it recognises and protects the dignity of people. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the commitment to promoting accountability for human rights abuse and safeguarding the U.S. financial system. The sanctions block access to U.S. property and bank accounts. Republican lawmakers criticized the absence of sanctions against Ma Xingrui, a Xinjiang official implementing genocidal policies. The State Department also imposed visa restrictions on individuals responsible for gender-based violence and repression of women and girls.
