GUWAHATI: Congress has projected a brigade of 10 women candidates as its trumpcard in the Meghalaya election, with a promise to make the hilly state a “safe haven” for women.

Congress has made higher maternal mortality rate (MMR), infant mortality rate (IMR) and lesser immunisation for children and institutional delivery key issues while reaching out to the mothers for votes in the matrilineal state.

Former minister Deborah C Marak, recipient of National Florence Nightingale Award 2021 (for nursing professionals) from the President, Victorealness Syiemlieh, former administrator Bethleen Dkhar, educationist Banidashisha Kharkongor and lawyer Rona Khymdeit are among the women candidates Congress has fielded to resist the NPP and TMC surge.

“The 10 women candidates whom Congress has fielded are accomplished women in their own right. The youngest is 28 years old. We also appeal to the women of Meghalaya to come forward and support our women candidates,” said AICC media coordinator Bobbeeta Sharma and president of Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress Joplin Scott Shylla, in a statement from Shillong on Thursday.

They alleged that although the 2018 manifesto of the NPP promised empowerment of women in the state, data tells a different story.

The Mahila Congress leaders said the National Family and Health Survey-5 (2019-20) has exposed the condition of healthcare in the state.
