Two boys drown in well in Salem

SALEM: Two nine-year-old boys drowned in a well located on an agricultural land in Yethapur here on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as B Kamesh and M Chinnadurai, both from Neiyyamalai near Yethapur. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the two who were Class IV students at a local government primary school, did not return home after school hours.

Around 7pm their families began searching for them. Eventually, some locals checked the well after they noticed two school bags on its parapet wall. "They found the boys' bodies floating in the well and informed us," said P Suresh, a relative of Kamesh.

Villagers then alerted Yethapur police of the incident. "The boys likely went to bathe in the well, but drowned," said an officer with the Yethapur police station. He added that the well was in an agricultural land owned by K Palanisamy, a farmer.

Fire and rescue personnel from the Vazhapadi fire station eventually fished out the bodies around 10:30pm. Police sent the bodies to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.

A case has been registered and further probe is on.
