Fake NCC officer booked for raping another minor girl

Krishnagiri: One more rape case has been booked against the main accused in the rape of a girl student and sexual harassment of 12 other girl students at an unauthorized NCC camp at a private school at Kandikuppam near Bargur in the district earlier this month, even as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by chief minister M K Stalin commenced an inquiry into the incident on Friday.
According to Krishnagiri district superintendent of police (SP) P Thangadurai, the main accused in the case, Sivaraman, 30, of Kaveripattinam, had conducted a similar unauthorized NCC camp at a private school in Krishnagiri town in January this year, when he threatened a 14-year-old girl participant and raped her.
“The girl student lodged a complaint against him with the all-woman police in Krishnagiri town on Wednesday evening. We registered a fresh case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act against Sivaraman today (Thursday),” the SP said.
He said Sivaraman, who posed as an NCC officer, had consumed rat poison on August 16 and 18 in fear of being arrested in the case.
“Doctors at the govt hospital in Krishnagiri found traces of poison in his blood samples when we took him to treat the fracture he suffered while attempting to escape arrest. He was subsequently shifted to the Salem Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. He is being observed in the intensive care unit. His condition is stable.”
In another development, the Krishnagiri district crime branch (DCB) police registered a case against Sivaraman on the day for posing as an advocate and cheating Sakthivel, 31, of Krishnagiri, of ₹36 lakh.
“In his complaint, Sakthivel on Wednesday said some people had forged a purchase deed for his property at Pettalapalli. Sivaraman approached him with a promise to restore the ownership of the property to his name. Sivaraman collected Rs36 lakh from him and didn’t keep his word,” another police officer said.
The SIT and the multi-disciplinary team formed by the chief minister, meanwhile, met the district administration and police officials on Friday.
The SIT is being led by inspector general of police (IGP) Bhavaneeswari, while the multi-disciplinary team is headed by social welfare secretary Jayasri Muralidharan. Both Bhavaneeswari and Jayasri encouraged victims, if any, to come forward and lodge complaints without any fear. They said they would stay back in the district until the inquiry was over.
Stalin had on Wednesday mandated the teams to conclude the inquiry in 15 days and submit a chargesheet in the court in 60 days.
During a press briefing at the district collector's chamber, Jayasri said counselling was being provided to the affected students and their family members.
