Take strong steps to curb illegal mining & revenue loss: Hemant
Ranchi: While reviewing the state mines and geology department, chief minister (CM) Hemant Soren on Wednesday directed officials to step up action against illegal mining.
Calling it a loss to state exchequer, he said, “Strict enforcement measures should be taken to curb the menace and revenue losses besides threat to environmental and law-and-order challenges. There should be inter-departmental coordination for regular monitoring and action.”
Hemant also asked officials to work towards resuming non-operational mines by initiating re-auction. “Start mapping all mining lease areas, including active and inactive sites. In the case of coal blocks under BCCL, CCL and ECL lying idle, authorities must explore measures for cancellation.”
Pushing for expansion of gold mining, he said seven gold mines produce around 20 kg annually. Identify bottlenecks and increase output, while fast-tracking auction of new gold blocks, he added.
“Jharkhand has significant gold reserves potential and requires scientific and planned development,” he said.
On sand mining, Hemant ordered early operationalisation of auctioned ghats and speedy auction of remaining ones. “Of 820 sand ghats, 376 are operated by panchayats, while 300 of 444 auctionable ghats have been allotted,” said an official.
Reviewing the state building construction department, the CM stressed on the quality, transparency and adherence to timelines in govt infrastructure works. “Infrastructural upgrade must be in sync with latest technology,” he said, asking officials to explore coal-based energy solutions for hostels in view of LPG supply constraints, and mapping of residential schools for streamlined fuel supply.
