JNAC takes up special cleaning drive of drains ahead of monsoon
Jamshedpur: The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has launched a special sanitation drive to clean all major drains within its command area before the onset of monsoon. The drive, which kicked off on Thursday, will be carried out till the third week of June.
On Thursday, JNAC deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) Krishna Kumar inspected major sites and directed contractors to expedite work to meet deadline. To ensure efficiency, contractors were told to deploy adequate manpower and machinery for desilting and garbage removal.
Kumar directed immediate disposal of extracted waste to prevent rainwater from sweeping it back into the channels. Once the clogged drains are cleared, crews will fog the areas and apply bleaching powder to maintain hygiene and prevent disease.
The cleaning operation targets several critical zones which have a high number of large drains. In Bistupur, Ramdas Bhatta area contains 15 large drains, while Northern Town has 11. Additionally, there are 10 major drains each in Burmamines and the Kashidih-Sakchi area. There are seven large drains in Sonari and three in Baridih.
This proactive measure addresses the perennial monsoon issue of clogged drainage, which frequently forces floodwaters into local homes.
BOX
1. Low-lying slums and peripheral neighbourhoods — such as Premnagar, Jojobera East Plant Basti, Devnagar, and parts of Golmuri, Baridih, and Kadma — typically suffer the worst stormwater flooding.
2. To tackle this widespread problem effectively, the JNAC deployed two dedicated cleaning crews, splitting operational responsibilities between Jamshedpur East and Jamshedpur West.
3. To manage the command area, the civic body assigned 40 members to the East and 30 to the West. The zone includes 56 major drains and more than 150 medium ones.
