Dumka: Two persons were killed, and 33 other people sustained injuries after a bus ferrying a wedding party overturned in Pakur district in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident took place near Malipada village under Amrapara block.
The deceased were identified as Olen Murmu, 64, and Rajesh Tudu, 16. The accident took place around 1 am on the Amrapara–Singarsi Main Road, said police.
The wedding party was returning from Pariyardaha village in Maheshpur block of Pakur district to Sundarpahari in Godda district when the driver allegedly lost control of the wheels, causing it to overturn.
“The bus was speeding when the driver lost control. Several passengers sustained serious injuries, while others were trapped beneath seats and other parts of the overturned vehicle before being rescued,” said Manoj Kumar, one of the injured.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and, with the help of locals, rescued the occupants and shifted them to the community health centre (CHC) in Amrapara.
“All the rescued passengers were initially admitted to the CHC, of which five seriously injured persons were later referred to Dumka for advanced treatment,” said Anup Roshan Bhengra, the officer-in-charge of Amrapara police station.
Residents said the prompt rescue effort helped avert more casualties and praised the police for their swift response.
