RAJKOT: Seven people died after being struck by lightning in Amreli, Rajkot and Botad districts of Gujarat as several parts were lashed by heavy to moderate rainfall on Saturday.

Five victims were from Amreli, while one person each died in Rajkot and Botad.

In Amreli, three members of a single family— a mother and her two children— were among those killed in Ambaradi village of Lathi taluka. The victims, all farm workers, were on their way home when the lightning struck.

Despite efforts to save them, they were declared dead after being rushed to Lathi government hospital by a 108 ambulance service.

The deceased were identified as Bharati Bhavesh Santhaliya (35), her daughter Riddhi (5), and son Radhe (5), along with Rupali Vanodia (18) and Shilpa Santhaliya (18), according to police reports.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when the weather abruptly changed, bringing heavy rain and lightning to rural areas of Lathi taluka. The five had been working in a cotton field when the farmer advised them to return home due to the changing weather conditions.

In a separate incident near Upleta of Rajkot district, a 17-year-old student, Devendrasinh Chudasama, was also killed by lightning. A resident of Sevanttra village, Devendrasinh was a Class 11 student and was returning home on his motorcycle after completing an exam in Keshod. He was taken to Upleta hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

In Botad's Padvadar village, a 45-year-old woman identified as Bhanu Saniya died when lightning struck her when she was working on a farm.

Of the five killed in Amreli, three victims were from one family — a woman and her two children. The incident happened in Ambaradi village of Lathi taluka. The five victims were farm workers and returning home.

After the lighting struck them, they five were rushed to Lathi govt hospital by an ambulance of 108 service but the doctor on duty pronounced them dead. A case was filed at Damnagar police station.

According to police, the five deceased were Bharati Bhavesh Santhaliya (35), her daughter Riddhi (5) and son Radhe (5), Rupali Vanodia (18), and Shilpa Santhaliya (18).

On Saturday afternoon, the weather changed suddenly in the rural areas of Lathi taluka and there was lightning and heavy rain in some places. The five who died were picking cotton in the field when the farmer advised them to return home.

In a separate incident near Upleta in Rajkot district, a 17-year-old student, Devendrasinh Chudasama, died after being struck by lightning. Devendrasinh, a resident of Sevanttra village near Upleta, was a Class 11 student.

He was returning home on a bike after taking an exam in Keshod. He was taken to Upleta hospital by an 108 ambulance but the doctor on duty declared him dead.
