3 excavators, truck seized in illegal sand mining raid
Raipur: Govt authorities late on Monday, seized three excavators and a heavy vehicle during a raid on alleged illegal sand mining operations in Gariyaband district, as the state govt intensified its crackdown on unauthorised extraction and transportation of minerals.
The action was carried out by a joint team of the state mining department’s central flying squad and district-level officials during an inspection at Kuruskera village in Rajim tehsil.
According to officials, the team found sand being excavated from the Pairi river using heavy machinery in violation of mining regulations. Acting under provisions of the mines and minerals (development and regulation) Act, officials seized and sealed three excavators allegedly engaged in the operation.
A Hyva truck allegedly involved in transporting illegally mined sand was also seized and parked at Rajim police station for action.
Officials said notices have been issued to the mine operator and machine owners, seeking their response regarding the alleged violations.
The raid comes amid an ongoing state-wide drive against illegal mining, transportation and storage of minerals. The issue of unauthorised sand extraction has remained a recurring concern in several districts, particularly along riverbeds where mechanised mining is prohibited or regulated.
The mining department said inspections and enforcement drives have been intensified to curb illegal extraction and prevent revenue losses to the state exchequer.
Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the govt is making all efforts to protect natural resources and ensure that mineral wealth is utilised in accordance with the law. He said strict action would continue against those involved in illegal mining and transportation activities.
