The experts were in the city for the general meeting of the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network. Andrew Jones, principal advisor and chief of the vaccine centre, UNICEF-Supply division, said, “Manufacturers face many challenges when it comes to supply chain. Availability of raw material is one of them. On the delivery side, supply chains in many countries are still operating on the older model. They have medical stores at the regional and district levels. The slow supply chain can hamper the response time.”

Padmashree Sampath, senior advisor to the president of Pharmaceuticals and Health, said ensuring the diversifying supply chain was a challenge. “Apart from the state support, funding plays an important role,” he said. Tania Cernuschi, unit head, agenda, policy and strategy, department of immunization, vaccines and biologicals, universal health coverage/lifecourse division, WHO, said, “We need more transparency in vaccine production and distribution.”
