PUNE: The changing political scenario in the state is affecting owners of small and medium businesses as workers are choosing rallies over work even as resolutions on key issues remain pending.

Owners of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) also want a dedicated department to resolve local issues pertaining to their businesses. “Many workers joined political rallies last week and this has impacted operations in SMEs,” founder and president of the SME Chamber of India, Chandrakant Salunkhe, said.

The changing political landscape in the state is also causing delay in issuing resolutions on important issues. “We were supposed to discuss issues such as power outages, strategies to bring bigger companies here to lend more support to SMEs in terms of increasing share of business. However, no big companies have manufacturing units here due to ongoing power issues. I do not see these issues getting resolved soon. State industries minister Uday Samant was to visit MIDC on July 5. He did not turn up and has not scheduled his visit too. With the political happenings around the state, there is a bleak chance that he will visit anytime soon,” President of Hingna MIDC Captain (retd) CM Randhir said.

Maharashtra has approximately 32 lakh small and medium businesses, which account for 60-70% of the state’s employment. “In the last couple of months, only few announcements of new investments by both Indian and global MNC’s have been made for the state compared to the past.Business owners want clarity on the situation in the state before making any long-term investment plans,” said a business owner on the condition of anonymity.

Secretary of the Chakan Industrial Federation Dilip Batwal said the uncertainty has an impact on the administration and decision-making of authorities.
