Pune district hosts highest registered voters in Maharashtra
MUMBAI: Pune district has the highest number of voters in the state with 82.8 lakh voters according to the latest data from the state’s chief electoral office. The Mumbai suburban district follows next with 73.5 lakh voters. The registered voters in Thane district are 65.8 lakh. In the last three weeks, the state has added 3.2 lakh voters to the electoral roll.
Pune district has the highest number of registered voters because it has four parliamentary constituencies. Mumbai suburban district has three parliamentary constituencies. “The large number of parliamentary constituencies in Pune district have led to the high voter count,” said a senior official from the state’s chief electoral office.
The state has four districts, where there are more women voters than men. These include Raigad and Ratnagiri in the Konkan, Gondiya in Vidarbha and Nandurbar in North Maharashtra. In Ratnagiri, women voters outnumber men by 41,904. In Sindhudurg, there are 1,306 more women voters than men. In Gondiya, district women voters outnumber male voters by 9,992. In Nandurbar district, there are 1,711 more women voters than men.
There are five districts which have more than 30 lakh voters. These are Ahmednagar, Solapur, Jalgaon, Kolhapur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
There are 10 districts which have more than 20 lakh voters. This includes Mumbai city, Buldhana, Amravati, Yavatmal, Nanded, Raigad, Beed, Satara, Sangli and Palghar.
The state has 9.2 crore voters, of which 4.8 crore are men and 4.4 crore are women. This means that that almost 48% of the state’s voters are women.
Officials say that the rise in the registration of women voters is the result of special drives. In 2019, the gender ratio in the state electoral roll was 911women per 1000 men. It has now risen to 923 after the state’s electoral office focused on increasing the registration of women voters.
Young voters still remain a major point of concern for the state electoral office. Data till March this year showed that 75% of this population had not yet registered their vote. The projected population of 18-19 year olds in the state was 45.7 lakh in March but they had only 11.2 lakh registered voters. Several initiatives of the Election Commission of India focus on young voters.
