Polytechnic courses in demand, FYJC seats unfilled

PUNE: The high demand for polytechnic and

vocational courses

has resulted in more than half of the over 91,000 seats remaining vacant in the

first year junior college

(FYJC)

common admission process

(CAP) here. The second

FYJC list

was announced on Monday.

Officials said many students apply for both diploma courses (polytechnic and vocational) and regular FYJC courses. However, after the FYJC merit list is announced, students opting for the polytechnic and vocational courses either don't enter the admission rounds or fail to report to the allotted colleges.

CAP committee chairman Dinkar Temkar said, "Students who get the college of first preference and those who do not confirm their admission are not included in the next rounds. Despite this, several students have not reported to the colleges which mean they have taken admission elsewhere."

Students who have scored above 95% have also applied for diploma courses this year with the mechanical branch being a hot favourite. Such students are eligible for lateral entry to second-year engineering after the diploma.

Temkar said the number of vacancies in the first two rounds is not unusual as the number of students scoring high percentages has gone up.
