Members of this social media group discover ‘trashy’ silver screen greats

PUNE: On the day famed character-role actor Rita Bhaduri passed away last month, the 10-year old Facebook group, I Love Trashy Hindi Movies, was abuzz. As a tribute, one of the group’s administrators Vaibhav Vishal, had posted a scene from “Nagin Aur Suhagan”, a low-budget movie featuring the late actor.

Much like the material it highlights, the group enjoys a large following. The group sees followers of Indian films, across the barrier of language, posting clips and posters from movies that may be termed the worstever in terms of dialogues, acting, or production.

While Chunky Pandey and Kabir Bedi appear in a number of the material shared, actors like Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah also turn up in some. The group’s avid followers testify the posts that make for a fun watch.

“There are bad movies and then there is trash, the key difference being the repeat value of the films. Plus, it’s like they don’t take themselves too seriously,” said entrepreneur Jacob Mathew.

Before Vishal came on board, Shome Sengupta started the page. Besides posting clips, the page also features lengthy articles on what constitutes a trashy movie. “We realized that we have a fascination for slightly obscure Hindi movies. So we decided to create a group to discuss and share the stories. Initially, a lot of articles were written by the administrators themselves. Some of them, like ‘The Gods Must Be Trashy’, written by Vaibhav on the cast of Mahabharat and Ramayan and their relationship with
