gunny sack godown
near Balaji hotel at Pisoli was gutted in a blaze that started around 1.30am on Friday.
No one was injured in the incident. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire brigade control room received a call from a hotelier that the godown was on fire and thick black fumes were emanating from the premises.
The control room referred the caller to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) fire brigade as the godown came under the Pisoli gram panchayat and not under the PMC limits. A PMRDA fire tender rushed to the spot. On ascertaining the magnitude of the fire, officials summoned seven fire tenders, including three from the PMRDA and four from the Pune Municipal Corporation.
PMRDA fire officer Vijay Mahajan told TOI, “We sprayed water on the godown, spread across three gunthas, and brought the fire under control within 45 minutes. We then uprooted the shutter and sprayed water on the gunny sacks and doused the fire in a span of over two hours.”
“The impact of the blaze was such that it gutted the godown completely,” he said.
“The firemen sprayed water on properties around the godown and prevented the flames from spreading. The fire tenders rushed to the spot in shortest possible time and started the fire fighting operation. The fire could have caused massive damage to neighbouring properties,” Mahajan said.
He said that the cause of the major fire could not be established immediately. Mukesh Thakkar, the godown owner, suspected that the fire could have been caused due to short circuit.
Hotelier Anna Kale said, “The godown is located near my hotel. It contained stacks of pulses and food grains. After I noticed thick black fumes emanating from the godown, I contacted the PMRDA’s fire brigade control room and rushed to the spot. The firemen took utmost care and ensured that the properties around the godown were not damaged.”
