First-year MBBS student found hanging in her flat in Vishrantwadi
Pune: A 23-year-old first-year MBBS student from a city medical college was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her flat in Vishrantwadi around 6am on Sunday.
Vishrantwadi police said the student was in her bedroom, while her mother and brother were asleep in other rooms of the flat.
Inspector Sampatrao Raut of Vishrantwadi police told TOI, “The family members retired to their rooms around midnight between Saturday and Sunday after having dinner together. We suspect that the student died sometime between midnight and 6am.”
Raut said, “The incident came to light when the student’s mother attempted to wake her up in the morning. She did not respond to repeated knocks on the door. The family members then opened the door and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.”
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
“We searched her room in the presence of her family members, but did not find any note,” the officer said.
According to police, the parents told them that she had been undergoing treatment for depression and had been emotionally disturbed for some time.
“She aspired to become a singer and had a beautiful voice. However, she enrolled in the MBBS course at a college in Katraj in accordance with her parents’ wishes. She stayed in the college hostel during the week and usually visited her family at their Vishrantwadi residence on weekends,” he said.
The officer added that the student’s father is a well-known medical practitioner based in Nanded.
