38 landlords booked for hiding tenant details
Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad police have registered cases against 38 landlords for failing to provide information while leasing out flats or houses to tenants. The cases were registered under Section 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) with different police stations in Pimpri-Chinchwad.The anti-terrorism branch of the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate and anti-terrorism cells on the police station level have carried out a special drive to trace illegal tenants, especially Bangladeshi nationals in the Pimpri Chinchwad area."In the last month, the police found 38 property owners who did not share their tenants' information with the police. We have registered cases against them," an officer from the special branch of the Pimpri Chinchwad police said. The police have made an appeal to the property owners to approach their nearby police station with all the necessary details of their tenants to avoid legal action. "We have also made an appeal to the people to alert the anti-terrorism branch at the police commissionerate if they notice any Bangladeshi national staying illegally in their locality," the officer said.According to a The Times of India report on May 1, the Pune city police have deported 130 Bangladeshi nationals over the past five years, including 53 in the last three months alone, underscoring an intensified crackdown.Deputy commissioner of police (special branch) Sandip Bhajibhakare said teams across police stations identified and apprehended illegal immigrants through sustained verification drives and intelligence inputs. Investigations revealed that many men who had crossed the border illegally were working at construction sites in Katraj, Ambegaon, Lonikand and other areas, while several women were found involved in prostitution rackets in Budhwar Peth and Katraj. The Faraskhana police alone nabbed 53 Bangladeshi nationals in the first quarter of 2026, including 14 detained from red-light areas in a single operation. Officials said most of the accused possessed forged Aadhaar cards and other fake Indian identity documents, which were verified and found fraudulent through police systems. Police said further inquiries are underway to trace networks facilitating illegal entry, shelter and employment, while coordination with central agencies has been stepped up to prevent recurrence.
