The shocked relatives of the bride and groom beat up the youngster, Vinod, for his action. But, they were surprised when Vinod and the bride revealed that they were in love. They said they were in love since they saw each other when Vinod’s family had gone to see the girl — Kaleeshwari — for his elder brother Rajesh six months ago. It was love at first sight for them, they said.
They had kept their relationship a secret till the last minute of the marriage.
Kamaraj, a native of Chellarapatti village near Tirupattur, and his family fixed the marriage of his second son Rajesh with Kaleeshwari of Rajapalayam. The marriage was scheduled on Thursday (June 1) morning in Bala Murugan temple at Thirukalgundram near Chellarapatti village. The bride, her family members and relatives reached Tirupattur a couple of days before the marriage.
On the eve of the marriage, when the families of bride and groom conducted the rituals, Kaleeshwari remained calm, while Vinod was busy with chores for the ceremony. They reached the temple early morning on Thursday. Everything went as planned till then.
“As per the rituals, thali (sacred thread) was taken around to get the blessing of elders. After that, it was handed over to the groom. When the priest finished the rituals and asked Rajesh to tie the sacred thread around the bride’s neck, Vinod pushed him from the manamedai (pedestal). Taking everyone by surprise, he took a thali that he was had in his pocket and tied it to the bride,” said a source.
Angered over this, relatives who had gathered for the wedding beat up Vinod. But, they were surprised to see the bride remain calm. Later, Vinod told his relatives that he and Kaleeshwari were in love. The girl too acknowledged it. It was love at first sight for them, when they met at the engagement six months ago, Vinod said. They had been speaking over phone.
People who had gathered learnt that Vinod and Kaleeshwari had planned the act and had waited till the last minute to execute it. Infuriated over this, Vinod’s brother Rajesh threw away the thali he had in his hand and ran away from the spot frustrated.
Sources said the Rajesh and Vinod, who were working in a garment firm, were not in good terms.
After an hour of consolation and talks, elders blessed Vinod and his lover turned-wife. Then, they left for the girl’s place later on the day.
