This polling station in Puducherry serves pathaneer, koozh, sundal, kozhukattai to voters

PUDUCHERRY: This unique polling station in Puducherry town on Friday served pathaneer (neera or palm nectar), moreneer (buttermilk), kezhvaragukoozh (porridge made from millet), sundal (legumes or lentils) and kozhukattai (pudding) to voters to help them beat the summer heat and to appreciate them for exercising their democratic duty in the searing summer heat.

The poll officials posted at this booth located in the restored heritage building, which houses VOC Government HSS, served the voters palm nectar from 7am to 9am, buttermilk from 9am to 11am, porridge from 11am to 1pm and lentils and pudding in the afternoon.

The election machinery meticulously avoided plastic materials and used only eco-friendly materials like palm leaves to set up this unique polling booth. The booth included EVM models made of paper to familiarize the voters with the functioning of the machine.

An exhibition of antique household metal utensils and papier-mâché sculptures at the booth was an instant hit among the voters. They admired the priceless antique items and neatly crafted sculptures while waiting for their turn to vote.

The poll officials distributed cloth bags to the voters to encourage them to avoid plastic materials and to start using cloth bags. The bags contained messages creating awareness among the people to vote without fail.

“This unique polling station is an attempt by the Puducherry election department to encourage people to turn out in large numbers to exercise their democratic duty. The department launched a campaign to encourage people to walk to polling stations to vote,” said a poll official.
