PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government has prohibited the movement of people on the coastal areas to prevent any loss of lives or property as the territory is gearing up to face the onslaught of cyclone Michaung, which is set to make a landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday morning.

“The movement of all persons on the coastal areas close to the sea shore of Puducherry, shall be prohibited from 7pm on December 3 to 6am on December 5,” said a statement from Puducherry district magistrate E Vallavan.

He warned that any person found violating the order would be punished with imprisonment for a term that may extend to six months or with a fine or both. He said the Indian meteorological department has issued an orange alert to the Puducherry coasts because of the severe cyclonic storm. The severe cyclonic storm is likely to cross south of Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100kmph gusting to 110kmph.

The Puducherry government has taken all precautionary measures to face the fury of the cyclone. The government has directed all the officials of ESF/ line departments, who are directly involved in the emergency response/ rescue/ restoration operations to be on duty. Meanwhile, two NDRF teams have reached Puducherry to assist the local teams in relief and rehabilitation works.

Cyclone warning signal number five was hoisted at the Puducherry port on Monday. The government has instructed the fishermen not to venture into the sea and established a control room with telephone number 04132353042 to receive distress calls and extend necessary help.
