PUDUCHERRY: A case has been filed regarding a controversial play at Pondicherry Central University's annual cultural festival.
The play allegedly depicted Hindu gods in an objectionable manner, leading to protests by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on March 30. The Kalapet police registered the case against the play's Director and Script Writer.
Pondicherry University is investigating the incident after receiving a complaint about the play staged by the Department of Performing Arts. An inquiry committee is being formed to address the matter, as confirmed by university sources.
The Registrar In charge has urged cooperation to maintain peace on campus. ABVP criticized the play's portrayal of characters from the epic 'Ramayana' as 'distorted and disrespectful'. They called for swift action against those responsible for hurting religious sentiments.
ABVP emphasized the importance of responsible freedom of expression that respects religious beliefs and cultural sensitivities. The student body demanded the immediate dismissal of the writer and director of the play 'Somayanam'.
ABVP stressed the need for creative expression that does not offend religious sentiments or fuel communal discord. The university is under pressure to act decisively in response to the incident, ensuring that freedom of expression is balanced with sensitivity towards religious sentiments.
