Centre issues notification for appointment of Pondicherry University vice-chancellor

PUDUCHERRY: The department of higher education, Union education ministry, has issued a notification for the appointment of vice-chancellor of Pondicherry University.

The notification -- dated December 2 -- was issued on the department’s website https://www.education.gov.in and the university's website https://www.pondiuni.edu.in.

The appointment will be made from a panel of names recommended by a committee constituted under the provisions of the Pondicherry University Act, 1985. The last date to apply for the post is December 31.

"The vice-chancellor being the academic as well as administrative head is expected to be a person possessing the highest level of competence, integrity, morals, and institutional commitment, a distinguished academician, with a minimum of 10 years of experience as a professor in a university or 10 years of experience in a reputed research and/ or academic administrative organization with proof of having demonstrated academic leadership," said the notification.

The candidates preferably must not be more than 65 years of age as of the closing date of receipt of the application.

The tenure of outgoing vice-chancellor Gurmeet Singh ended on November 23. Singh was given a one-year extension after the completion of a five-year term as vice-chancellor. Singh’s five-year tenure expired on November 23 last year.

Singh's tenure ended amidst controversies of convening the executive council a day before his last day in office and passing a few resolutions approving the appointment of people in vital key posts. Pondicherry University is a central university established by an act of Parliament in October 1985.
