A university chair, a road, a street after the leader

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry government has proposed to install a bronze statue in memory of late DMK leader M Karunanidhi. Speaking after the cabinet meeting, the Union territory’s chief minister V Narayanasamy, declared that the government would constitute a committee to identify a venue for installing the statue.

The chief minister announced his government will observe a week-long state mourning with effect from Tuesday, extended from the three-day mourning announced earlier.

The government will also fund and set up a Tamil chair after Karunanidhi’s name in Pondicherry University, which will strive hard for the development and propagation of Tamil language, Narayanasamy said. Similarly, the bypass

and a prominent street in Puducherry town will be named after him. The Union territory government has also decided to name the new

of postgraduate studies at Karaikal after the DMK leader.

Earlier, Narayanasamy and his cabinet colleagues paid floral tributes to the portrait of Karunanidhi at the legislative

assembly

. A host of leaders, including those from the opposition parties in Puducherry, condoled the death of the DMK leader.
