A new era in Patna’s transport

Come December, the city is set to transform its urban commuting landscape with the launch of the Urban Water Metro Project. This landmark initiative will seamlessly integrate boat services with the city’s metro rail and road network, promising a faster, greener, and congestion-free travel experience along the Ganga river. Designed as a sustainable transport system, the project positions Patna among the leading Indian cities adopting innovative solutions for modern mobility.

First trial run on the Ganga

The first trial run of MV-Gomadharkonwar was successfully conducted to test performance, docking systems, and passenger safety features. The 50-seater, fully air-conditioned vessel is equipped with CCTV surveillance, LCD information screens, and modern navigation technology to ensure a safe and comfortable ride. Another trial run is scheduled after Durga Puja, followed by two months of extensive checks by engineers before the vessel is handed over to the state government for official operations.

3/8

Route details and connectivity

The inaugural route of the Patna Water Metro will stretch 10.5 km between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, with key stoppages at Gandhi Ghat and Gai Ghat. This strategic corridor will ease travel across the river city, reduce road congestion, and provide scenic, uninterrupted views of the Ganga. Future plans include expansion to four routes with ten terminals, ensuring connectivity to major parts of Patna and its surrounding districts.

4/8

Cost and investment

The cost of MV-Gomadharkonwar is approximately ₹12 crore, while the overall Patna Water Metro Project is valued at around ₹908 crore. The project is a joint effort of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Bihar government, with technical assistance from Cochin Shipyard engineers. This large-scale investment underlines Bihar’s push toward sustainable growth, modern infrastructure, and smart city development.

5/8

Modern facilities for commuters

The vessels are designed with passenger comfort in mind, featuring full air-conditioning, cushioned seating, real-time route updates, CCTV surveillance, and wheelchair accessibility. Entertainment and information will be provided through LCD screens, while terminals will include floating jetties, modern docks, recreational spaces, and smart ticketing systems. The design also supports panoramic river views, making commuting a pleasant experience.

6/8

Environmental and economic benefits

The Water Metro project is expected to play a key role in reducing air pollution and road traffic congestion in Patna. By promoting electric and hybrid ferries, it will cut carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, the project is projected to boost river cruise tourism, create local employment opportunities, support small businesses near terminals, and position Patna as a model of eco-friendly development along the Ganga.

7/8

Expansion plans and future vision

Authorities have identified four potential routes and ten terminal points across Patna for the expansion of the Water Metro. The service will gradually be integrated with the Patna Metro rail project, road transport, and other multimodal systems. With the arrival of larger vessels like the 100-seater MV Nishadraj, Patna’s waterways are expected to become a backbone of urban mobility, reshaping how residents and tourists travel across the city.

8/8

Patna among 18 cities for water metro

Patna is one of 18 Indian cities chosen for the development of an efficient Urban Water Transport system. With its ₹908 crore project, Patna is set to become a pioneer in inland water transport in eastern India. The initiative not only strengthens the city’s transport network but also boosts riverfront tourism, reduces travel time, and sets an example for sustainable urban development. The Patna Water Metro stands as a pilot project that could inspire similar models across the nation.
