Patna: In the first poll-related violence incident during the Lok Sabha elections in the state, a youth was shot dead while two others sustained gunshot injuries in a violent clash between the supporters of the RJD and the BJP, in Saran district on Tuesday.
The incident, which occurred at Bada Telpa village near Bhikhari Thakur Chowk located in the outskirts of Chhapra district headquarters under the town police station area, led to tension in some parts of the town.
Soon after the violent clash, the Saran district administration suspended internet services across the district for two days and also deployed police force at all vulnerable points in Chhapra town.
“Internet services will remain suspended till 9am on May 23,” a joint order issued by Saran DM Aman Samir and SP Gaurav Mangala said.
SHO, Chhapra Town, Ashwani Kumar Tiwari was shifted to the police lines for his failure to pre-empt and check the violent clash.
Rohini meets injured RJD men at hospital“Three persons of one side received gunshot injuries in the violent clash near Bada Telpa village. One of them died on the spot while two others are undergoing treatment at the PMCH in Patna. Both the injured are out of danger. The deceased youth has been identified as Chandan Kumar Rai,” Saran district police said in a statement on Tuesday.
The injured persons have been identified as Manoj Rai and Guddu Rai, police said. “Acting swiftly, the police arrested two persons — Ramakant Singh, son of Jai Narayan Singh Solanki, and Ravikant Singh, son of Ram Pratap Singh — both residents of Bada Telpa village. Police also recovered firearms and cartridges which were used in the incident, from their possession. An FSL team also inspected the spot,” police said in the statement.
Both the arrested persons are supporters of the BJP. One of them, Ramakant Singh, owns private educational institutions in Saran district, locals said. Trouble in the area erupted on Monday afternoon when some influential persons tried to indulge in bogus voting at polling booths nos. 318 and 319 located in a school at Bada Telpa village. This led to an altercation between the workers of the BJP and the RJD. On getting information about the clash, RJD candidate from Saran seat Rohini Acharya, who is daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, rushed to the said polling booth where she was heckled and abused by the workers of the rival BJP.
“It seems Tuesday’s violent clash occurred in retaliation of Monday’s altercation between the rival groups,” the district police said.
“An armed group of the BJP workers attacked the RJD supporters while they were taking tea at a shop near the Bhikhari Thakur Chowk on Tuesday morning,” RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said in a statement. Later in the day, Rohini went to the PMCH and enquired about the health of both the injured RJD workers.
