Minor girl attempts suicide inside thana

Madhepura: A minor girl allegedly attempted self-immolation inside the washroom of Shankarpur police station in Madhepura district on Monday, triggering chaos on the premises.

Police personnel rescued the girl and rushed her to the community health centre at Shankarpur. She was later referred to Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Medical College and Hospital, Madhepura, where doctors said she suffered 30-40% burn injuries and remained critical.

The incident is linked to a love affair involving a village youth lodged in jail since Jan in connection with a case filed after the girl’s family opposed their relationship.

According to sources, the girl had recently denied before a court that the accused had subjected her to any wrongdoing, leading to tension within the family. Allegations also surfaced that a family member attempted to attack her before locals intervened and took her to the police station for safety.

Madhepura SDPO Pravendra Bharti said, “The victim is under treatment and police are investigating into the matter.”
