PATNA: All major political parties in Bihar, except BJP, are opposing the controversial 'Agnipath' scheme for recruitment in the armed forces for a short period of 4 years.

Even CM Nitish Kumar's JD(U) and former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha Secular (HAMS), which are the BJP allies in Bihar, demanded review of the scheme.

JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh on Friday made a fresh plea to the Narendra Modi government for an immediate review of 'Agnipath' scheme. He also urged the Centre to assure protesting students and youth that their future would not be adversely affected by the new recruitment policy.

"The announcement of 'Agnipath' scheme by the Centre has triggered resentment among students and youth of Bihar and other parts of the country. Violent incidents are occurring at different places. The Centre should take immediate cognizance of the development and review the scheme. If that is not possible, it must assure the students and youth that the scheme is not going to adversely affect their future," Lalan said.

JD(U) is the largest alliance partner of the BJP at the Centre also runs a coalition government in Bihar while it supports a BJP-led government in Manipur.

Lalan had made a similar demand on Thursday.

HAM(S), another NDA partner in Bihar, also demanded immediate recall of the 'Agnipath' and restoration of old recruitment system in the armed forces. In a statement on Friday, Manjhi said his party was with the youth of the country on the issue of 'Agnipath' scheme.
