PATNA: With election for the post of Bihar legislative council chairperson scheduled to be held on August 25, names of few JD(U) MLCs like Devesh Chandra Thakur and Ram Bachan Roy have started doing the rounds.

Sources said Thakur, who has been winning the legislative council election from Tirhut graduate constituency, has a high probability to be the Mahagatbandhan’s candidate. Thakur had for the first time won the legislative council election in 2002 as an independent candidate and had been a member of the Upper House since then. In 2008, he was elected as a JD(U) candidate, in 2014 as an independent and in 2020 on a JD(U) ticket.

“Ghulam Ghaus was also in the race. But Thakur seems to be ahead. However, anything can happen even at the last moment,” said a Mahagathbandhan leader. He added since the RJD is eyeing the post of the assembly Speaker for Awadh Bihari Chaudhary, the council chairperson post will go to JD(U). BJP’s Awadhesh Narain Singh is the acting chairperson of the legislative council.

As per the present strength in the legislative council, Mahagatbandhan candidate will be in a comfortable position to win. The break-up shows JD (U) has a maximum 25 MLCs, followed by BJP (23), RJD (14), Congress (4), Left (2), HAM-S (1), RLJP (1), and Independents (5). The council secretariat has started the process for the election.
