MOTIHARI: The bodies of a 15-year-old girl and her teenaged boyfriend, who were allegedly killed for honour, were taken off funeral pyre by the police in the wee hours of Wednesday.

As soon as police got information, they rushed to the cremation ground on the bank of the Burhi Gandak river near Dumari village under the Sugauli police station area in East Champaran district and recovered the partially burned bodies. The bodies were later sent to Motihari sadar hospital for postmortem.

Motihari SDPO Raj said primary investigations revealed that it was a case of honour killing. The boy was 16-year-old. "The girl's mother has been arrested and she is being quizzed by police. The deceased boy's aunt has told police that the former had gone to watch a dance programme near his village on Tuesday night, but did not return home. The killers slit throats of the boy and the girl. Police are investigating the case from all angles," he added. According to locals, the girl and the boy belonged to different castes. "The boy was in love with the girl. However, the girl's family members were against it," they said.

The SDPO said the girl's family members, apart from her mother, have fled the village and raids were on to arrest them.
