Noida: A 32-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for throwing acid on a woman in Ballukheda village in Dankaur, Greater Noida. The woman received burns on her face, head and back, but is said to be out of danger.
According to police, the woman, Rekha, and the suspect, identified as Vinod Gurjar (32), were living together. Vinod, who works as a farmer, is a resident of Mahmood Nagar village in Greater Noida.
Ravinder Rathi, SHO Dankaur, said Rekha is a widow with three children - Arun (10), Aman (7) and Sonam (12). Her husband, a driver, died five years ago. Rathi said Rekha and Vinod had been living together for the last three years. "Of late, they developed some differences over personal issues and on Wednesday, Vinod threw acid at the woman and fled," he said.
Rekha's son Arun, who was with her when she was attacked, said he and his mother were returning from her maternal home in Jhajhar to Dankaur and were near her house. "Vinod approached us on a bike. He had an argument with my mother and suddenly took out the acid bottle from his pocket and threw acid at her," he said.
Rekha resisted the bid and threw her sandals at Vinod who fled from the spot. On hearing her screams for help, locals rushed to her aid and informed police, who took her to a hospital. She was first rushed to a private hospital and then referred to District Hospital in Noida, where she is presently undergoing treatment.
