Noida: Acting on the directions of the Supreme Court-appointed committee on road safety, Noida traffic police seized the driving licences of 100 traffic offenders and have decided to recommend to the transport department for suspension of the same.
The move
follows a meeting of the committee members with NCR traffic officials.. Constituted in April 2014, the committee was formed by the apex court on the basis of a PIL to measure and monitor the implementation of road safety laws in the country. The committee had directed suspension of licences of those charged with various traffic violations driving under influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs, red-light jumping, carrying overload in goods carriages and persons in goods carriages and using mobile phone while driving for not less than three months. On April 25, we had a meeting of NCR traffic officials where we asked them to strictly follow the directions," Dr Nishi Mittal, former head of traffic engineering and safety at Delhi's Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) told TOI. Mittal is a part of the three-member committee headed by Justice (retd) K S Radhakrishnan which also includes former transport secretary S Sundar.
"We have decided to send around 100 licenses to the RTO Office recommending their suspension," said Sanjay Singh, SP (traffic). Noida said. G B Nagar SSP Kiran S said traffic violators will not be spared. "We will deploy enforcement officials at different crossings and major intersections to check violations. Relevant action will be taken against any such person who violates traffic rules," Kiran S told TOI.Meanwhile, Rachna Yaduvanshi, ARTO (administration) said that the transport department keeps on getting recommendations for cancellation of licenses of offenders who violate traffic rules in Delhi or Bangalore. ""We will follow the procedure as soon as we receive the recommendations," said Rachna Yaduvanshi, ARTO (administration), Noida.
Elaborating on the quantum of the punishment, she said, "It depends on the seriousness of the offense, if it is red-light jumping, overloading or usage of mobile phone while driving, the suspension will be for three months only, but if it is DUI, then it will be for six months."
