NAVI MUMBAI: Prabhat Koli (22), a marathon open water swimmer has completed the California Triple Crown, thus successfully swimming three open water challenges -Catalina Channel, Santa Barbara Channel and Lake Tahoe.
By doing this, he has become the first Asian and youngest to accomplish California Triple Crown of Marathon Solo Swimming in the open water in California. He has been awarded the triple crown by World Open Water Swimming Association, California soon after completing his third swim of Lake Tahoe recently.
Koli cleared the first hurdle of Catalina Channel while crossing the 20 miles distance between Santa Catalina Island and the California mainland in August 2016 followed by Santa Barbara Channel of 12.3 miles between San Miguel Island and the California mainland in July 2019. He achieved the triple crown by swimming the 1.3 miles long Lake Tahoe on July 31 this year.
"I am elated to have overcome all three challenges successfully amid extreme cold water. It was my dream to cross all these popular swim routes. Practising for months together in the low oxygen zone and cold water Nainital Lake has helped me a lot to swim the California waters. However, the challenges were quite tough," said Koli.
He is the first Asian swimmer who swam Jersey to France and around Jersey Island in the UK.
