Motorists caught violating traffic rules on CCTV cameras at junctions will receive e-challans from Friday
Nashik: Motorists caught flouting traffic rules on CCTV cameras installed at traffic signals would begin receiving e-challans from Friday. On Monday, 15 traffic personnel were trained by Smart City project officials on using CCTV feeds to generate e-challans for traffic rule violators. Police commissioner Sandeep Karnik, deputy police commissioner (crime) Kirankumar Chavan and DCP (traffic and HQ) Kirithika CM visited the police control room to review the training process.
Over the past five years, the Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) has installed CCTV cameras across the city. "At least 1,132 cameras have been installed at major traffic junctions, including 282 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and 141 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras. All are integrated with the police control room," an official said. These cameras would record traffic violations and send the data to the control room, where trained personnel would verify the offences and issue e-challans. "The system is likely to go live on Feb 20," an officer said. The Smart City has also set up 13 Variable Message Display (VMD) boards across the city to spread awareness about traffic rules. Signal jumping remains a major issue in the city, with many motorists crossing stop lines or jumping signals when police are not present. Senior officers have urged motorists to follow traffic rules to avoid penalties.Last year, 197 people died in road accidents in the city, mostly due to speeding and rash driving, the police said.
