11-year-old & his grandfather killed in multi-vehicle accident on Mumbai-Agra highway at Chandwad
Nashik: A 62-year-old man and his 11-year-old grandson were killed after a crane-mounted truck rammed multiple vehicles on the Rahud Ghat stretch of the Mumbai-Agra highway, near Chandwad in Nashik district, on Tuesday afternoon, the police said.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Kayyub Abdul Razaq (62) and Abdul Rehman (11), residents of Mohanbabanagar in Malegaon. Both were travelling in a pickup from Chandwad to Malegaon when the crash occurred around 4pm.
Inspector Kailas Wagh, of the Chandwad police station, said, “The crane-mounted truck driver lost control while descending the ghat section. The crane-truck rammed a pickup, and two other vehicles that were moving parallel on the road also got hit.”
Due to the impact, the elderly man and the boy were thrown from the vehicle and died of severe injuries, the police said.
Yogesh Baviskar, a 25-year-old a resident of Malegaon and driver of the goods autorickshaw, sustained minor injuries.
The police and highway authorities went to the spot after being alerted by the Chandwad toll plaza personnel, and cleared congestion on the busy highway.
Inspector Wagh said, “We have arrested the crane-truck driver. He has been booked under the relevant section of the BNS for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.” Traffic movement was briefly disrupted, but restored soon after, Wagh added.
