‘Teach children values to make them good citizens’

Nagpur: Parents today are quite confused about raising their children. Should they conform to traditional values or adopt a modern approach? This confusion is making young generation confused too and in this chaos, the right values are not being taught to children. This is why the atrocities against women are increasing, said famous ghazal singer Vishnu Solanke on Saturday.

Library on the stance of literature on rising atrocities against women to mark International Women’s Day, he said children are needed to be taught importance of values to become good citizens.

Solanke talked about sexism and patriarchy which has been going on since ancient times and is still prevalent. “Unfortunately, the emotional trials and tribulations faced by women are quite disregarded. There was so much injustice done to Urmila, wife of Laxman in epic Ramayana. But no one knows about it. Today, the condition is no different,” he said.

Lawyer Gaurav Khond was of the opinion that literature today is also manifested in the form of short films and web series. “Lack of censorship on these platforms is exposing young minds to immoral activities. It is a big cause for crime against women.

Amruta Indurkar, a lecturer, said atrocities against women can be physical and mental in nature. “Causing mental and physical abuse, rape and harming the dignity of a woman are all forms of atrocities.” She cited the examples of writers such as Pratima Joshi and Monica Gajendragadkar who have highlighted the plight of women in their literary works.
