NMC panels: BJP may get max 73 posts, Congress 25

Nagpur: The February 24 special general body meeting of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to be more than a routine exercise for committee formation. Behind the numerical dominance of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lies a deeper exercise in internal balancing, accommodation, and political signalling. With 102 corporators in the 151-member house, BJP is comfortably placed to sweep all 12 committees, including the powerful 16-member standing committee and the 12-member transport panel. However, calculations indicate that the party can accommodate only around 73 corporators across the 12 committees, leaving nearly 30 members without committee berths in the first round.
The numbers underline a key challenge: managing aspirations within an overwhelmingly large majority. Committee positions are crucial not only for influence but also for access to decision-making, funds, and administrative leverage. While the BJP is expected to secure 11 seats in the standing committee and dominate the other panels with six members each, internal negotiations are understood to be intense, especially over the standing committee chairmanship.BJP already announced that it would appoint a woman corporator as chairperson in the standing committee. Sources in BJP hinted that the party is thinking of nominating women corporators as chairpersons in all 12 committees and may also urge other political parties to nominate women members to the panels.Congress, with 34 corporators, is likely to secure around 25 positions across the 12 committees. Significantly, sources indicate that the party may extend support to the two corporators of Shiv Sena (UBT) by accommodating them in subject committees, though not in the standing or transport panels, which are considered politically sensitive.Such a move would allow Congress to maintain opposition cohesion while ensuring representation for smaller allies in the civic house. It would also send a subtle political message about opposition unity.AIMIM, with six corporators, is expected to secure one seat in almost every committee, ensuring that all its members find representation. Smaller parties, including IUML, NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and BSP, are unlikely to find space unless last-minute adjustments are made.For BJP, the exercise is less about defeating opponents and more about managing internal expectations. For Congress, it is about maximising representation and keeping allies within the fold.
