NAGPUR: Financially weaker sections, who could never imagine availing treatment at private
multi-speciality hospitals
, are surely benefited by the government’s Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, earlier known as
Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana. The number of beneficiaries covered under the scheme has seen a steady increase and it has reached over 10.05 lakh families in the district in five years.
Under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, 5,34,480 families from the city and 4,70,551 from other parts of the district are provided medical cover of Rs 1.5 lakh for which the government pays Rs 333 annual premium per ration card. Every below poverty line (BPL), lower income group, above poverty line (APL) families, which possess ration card, and the families which are covered under Antyodaya and Annapurna schemes are automatically covered under the mediclaim scheme. Total 971 diseases are covered under the scheme.
The scheme, launched in July 2012, had seen a modest beginning with out of the total 1,673 patients hospitalized, 1,671 had undergone surgeries till November 2013. Similarly, from November 2016 till date, the number of patients who were hospitalized was 14,659 while 13,261 had undergone surgeries. The number has seen a steady increase with over 68,975 persons receiving treatment of which 67,437 underwent surgeries in the five years since launch. The total cost of the treatment has been Rs 157.21 crore.
A committee, with collector Sachin Kurve as chairman and district civil surgeon Dr Umesh Navade as executive member, regularly monitors the scheme implementation and conducts random inspections at all the 35 hospitals on its panel.
Nagpur district coordinator of the scheme Dr Dhiraj Wasekar says, “The 35 hospitals empanelled from the city include 31 private and four government hospitals – Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Super Speciality Hospital (SSH),
Indira Gandhi Government
Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) and Daga Hospital. Of the total hospitals, 24 are multiplicity and 11 are speciality hospitals.”
Dr Wasekar told TOI, “Collector has directed the officials to conduct surprise visits at the empanelled hospitals for ensuring proper implementation of the scheme.”
Recently, one of the beneficiaries Omprakash Bante had lodged a complaint that a private hospital recovered additional amount of Rs 15,000 from him. Taking note of it, Kurve directed the hospital to return the amount recovered from the patient.
The committee has also launched a

for the ease of patients. Kurwe has urged the citizens to call on Toll Free number 18002332200 or 155388 for enquiry/complaints.
