High-Stakes Contest Shapes Up In East Nagpur’s Prabhag 21: Two powerpuff girls & a dark horse

Nagpur: With two formidable women in fray, the high-voltage campaign trail in East Nagpur's Prabhag 21 is building into cliffhanger, where every vote will count.Heavyweight incumbent corporator Abha Pande, who's contesting on NCP (Ajit Pawar) ticket, is locked in a direct fight with Rutika Daff from Congress. This power puff duel has electrified the area straddling Shantinagar, Mudaliar Chowk, and Satranjipura to Saheed Chowk, Maskasaath, Khairipura, Prem Nagar, Sai Nagar, Shreeram Society, Paharpura, Gondpura, Narayanpeth, and Lodhipura.
Prabhag 21 comprising roughly 20% central and 80% East Nagpur zones, boasts of 65,000 voters across 96 booths. While Itwari resonates with chants for Abha Pande, Rutika Daff's influence is strongly felt on her home turf of Prem Nagar. Pande, a seasoned politician and ably supported by her husband, Bijju, is facing anti-incumbency.On the other hand, Daff is capitalising on her ‘fresh face' appeal, popularity built around mass participation in cultural events like ‘dahi handi'. Sources on the ground suggest Daff's financial muscle could prove decisive.Political observers point to a potential twist. With Pande and Daff likely to split votes, BJP's Nisha Bhoyar could emerge as the dark horse. A BJP representative from East Nagpur remarked during a corner meeting at Zade Chowk, "With the duo cutting into each other's vote banks, Bhoyar may just get lucky."In neighbouring Prabhag 21B, the contest is equally intriguing. Congress candidate Bhavesh Talmale, backed by a strong family legacy (his mother Sangeeta is a prominent Congress leader), is seen as a serious contender. Yet, the favourite remains NCP (Ajit Pawar)'s Nitin Satnawane, who earlier won the 2017 civic election on a Congress ticket from the same neighbourhood — even challenging areas loyal to sitting BJP MLA Krishna Khopade. BJP's Rambhau Ambulkar is viewed as an outsider, making the fight primarily between Satnawane and Talmale.A local rallyist noted minority voters from Satranjipura and Prem Nagar form a reliable Congress vote-bank and could tilt the balance in a close race. Talmale, hailing from Deshpande Layout in Nandanvan, is also considered somewhat of an outsider.Prabhag 21D presents a more one-sided affair, with Sena (UBT)'s Ajay Dalal enjoying strong backing from his Lakadganj-Khairipura base. His experience as a seasoned neta, combined with his wife Alka's popularity, positions him favourably against BJP's Sanjay Awchat and Congress's Manish Umredkar.
